My cat has a slight heart murmur and was wondering if anyone knows anything about heart murmurs in cats. We found out she had a heart murmur when my cat was 9 or 10.
Oh no! I'll see if I can get one of our cat health friends to come here for some advice.
Hi Snowball,
Sorry to hear that your cat has a heart murmur.
Heart murmurs can have a few different causes including stress, high temperatures, hyperthyroidism, infections, problems with the heart valves and heart disease.
I would suggest that you ask your vet to carry out some further investigations such as an ultrasound scan and a blood test to find out exactly what is causing the problem. Cat's do suffer with heart disease but, just like us humans, they often cope really well once the exact problem has been diagnosed by the vet and treatment is started.
Here is a blog post that may be useful for more information
or you can have a look on the ICatCare website.
That would be great Medran.
Does this deal with heart murmurs in cats? The vet we asked said to be very careful and feed her grain free food for her scratching. The vet didn't really give us much information unfortunately.
Thanks for the advice. I did go to the link, Heart Disease: Symptoms, Diagnosis And Treatment but did not go to ICatCare website since the link wasn't provided. Do you have the link? If so, please provide it.
Hi
Here is the link to the Icatcare site https://icatcare.org/advice/cat-health/heart-murmurs-cats
If your vet didn't give you much information at the time, I would ask them to clarify whether this is a serious problem or seek a second opinion.
Thanks.
